Artist Profile: Brent Orr

To me, Brent Orr's work recalls spaghetti westerns like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: cinematic, sun-bleached and serious. After speaking to Orr about his process, a more personal and nostalgic narrative emerges, but one that nevertheless remains enigmatic.

Working with photography, I'm exploring the reflections of a past, closely connected to my upbringing on a dairy farm.
I am working from an 8mm projector and an old wooden box filled with reels that were given to me by my Grandmother. The only information I had of the original images is that, they were shot by my Grandmother's uncle.
The process has an integral role in the final image. I appropriate the original image by shooting from the reel; I then manipulate the image by crumpling, defocusing, post processing and re-shooting to create a new image that conveys my own narrative.
While reworking the image, I ask myself the questions: who are the people, what are they doing, and what is their story? In turn, the work asks the same of the viewer.
